STEPS TO CONSIDER BEFORE  CREATING A BLOG

If you are thinking about writing a blog then you have probably asked yourself whether or not it’s really a good idea for YOU to start a blog.

After all, bloggers have to be experts, right?

Well, what is an expert anyway?

Let’s take the example of two separate bloggers:

The first blogger is a food scientist.  This guy has an advanced degree and understands all the ins and outs of the chemistry behind cooking.

The second blogger is someone who has been preparing meals for her family for many years.  She never had any formal training in cooking, but she has a wealth of experience.

Whose blog would you want to read?

It would depend on what you were looking for right?

Each would have their own specific audience.  Anyone interested in the science behind cooking would find the first blog to be entertaining.  While anyone interested in the practical side of preparing meals would find the second blog more useful.

What this example shows is that successful blogging comes down to one thing: EXPERIENCE

If you have life experience, then you can be a successful blogger.  Most people wouldn’t describe someone who has simply cooked for their family all of their lives as an “expert” in cooking, but in the blogging world things are different.  People read blogs to hear about other people and their experiences.

Your experience is your expertise.

If you don’t have much life experience, then maybe starting a blog isn’t for you.  But most adults have experienced enough things in life to provide great content for a blog.

I have helped people start blogs about a variety of topics from cooking, traveling, and fashion, to dealing with a major illness or life event.

And there is no reason you need to stick to just one topic.  Most people have life
experience in a wide variety of areas, so a blog about a variety of topics can work just as well.  In fact, a personal journal or diary format is one of the most popular ways to use a blog.

So when thinking about whether or not you should start a blog, keep in mind that people read blogs to hear from real people, not “experts”.  People want to hear about personal first-hand experiences, not information from a textbook.

Once you have some idea of what you want your blog to be about you will need to choose a name for your blog.  I’ll send you another email shortly with some tips on how to choose a good name, but for the over-achievers that want to get started immediately you can check out some tips for choosing a good blog name here.
